BEING THE TEXT OF A JOINT PRESS BRIEFING BY THE LEADERSHIP OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) ZONE A AND THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NAKASS NATIONAL BODY) ON THE 15th OF APRIL, 2016 AT AREWA HOUSE KADUNA. TITLE: THE SUBJUGATION AND NEGLECT OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS IN KADUNA STATE.
PROTOCOLS,
It is with total dismay and a burdened heart that we welcome you to this inauspicious press briefing jointly held by the NANS Zone A and the NAKATSS (NATIONAL BODY). This came up as a result of the neglect, oppression and total disregard of the rights and privileges of the Nigerian students in Kaduna state by His Excellency Mal. Nasiru Ahmad El-Rufa'i.
Being the voice of the voiceless, vanguard of the oppressed and the custodians of the sacred trust of Nigerian students, our position annd resolution to address the press was borne out of several meetings held by the students union leaders and stake holders across the tertiary institutions in Kaduna state, we want to bring to the notice of His Excellency that Nigerian students in kaduna state played a vital and responsible role during the last general elections that produced him as the governor of the state by not allowing themselves to be used as political thugs to cause mayhem that would end up discrediting the electoral process. We as an organization monitored the election at our various campuses and further ensured that our students used as electoral officials by INEC are not bought over to rig the elections, we did not stop there as we also ensured that we mobilized our students to vote massively for El-rufa'i and turn down the Dasuki billions.
It is based on aforementioned role of our to ensure that the election was successful and to a greater extent violent free that we feel highly betrayed and our constituency neglected by the incumbent governor.
Without mincing words, all effort of the duo leadership to have an audience with the Governor proves abortive as he utterly refused to grant /approve all letters sent to him to sit with us, listen and address our problems as a father, true democrat and a leader he portrays himself. Instead the Governor has been very draconian in his policies as seen in the recent increment in the school fees of the state owned institutions even though He the Governor in the guise of making education looks accessible to all made application forms free for all aspirants, what use and benefit will it be that after gaining admission our parents cannot afford to pay the tuition fee and facilities at this institutions are inadequate.
It is worthy of clarification that since the inception of this administration, the students of Kaduna state have not receive their scholarships even after the Governor subjected them to untold hardship of biometric data capturing. This process SAW and lead to the incapacitation of some of our students and several others incurred various degrees of injuries due to road accident, yet the government kept spending huge amount of money into billions in his highly criticized jamboree policy of school feeding program.
Very unfortunate is the overseas scholarships scheme of the state government which has been limited to graduates with first class only, this we perceive as a deliberate attempt to award the scholarships to ward's of political allies who attends private or foreign universities where first class degrees are up for sale and affordable to them only and the recent move to exempt Diploma and NCE students from benefiting from the state scholarship. The Governor has still not deem it fit and timely to appoint SA Students Affairs 10 months into his administration to be an intermediary between the students and the government in a bid to addressing our plight, since the ministry of NGO and students affairs which students do channel their request for assistance to government and lias with government in organizing workshops and seminar for sanitizing and enlightening students against social vices and promote moral uprightness is no longer functional.
In lue of the above and in the interest of peace,we demand that:
1.The Governor should as a matter of necessity appointments a special Adviser on students affairs who must be a comrade and well conversant with the students struggle to be meeting with students and reporting directly to the Governor.
2.The Scholarships, all rights and privileges entitled to students be fully paid as at when due to motivate the students.
3.Just as the Governor avail himself for town hall meeting with other stakeholders,he should also create enabling environment to meet with the students' constituency too.
4.The government should review the fees of the state owned institutions to avoid mass action by the students.
5.The governor should monitor and ensure the full implementation of the budget tary allocation to the education ministry. 6.Lastly,the governor Mal.Nasir Elrufai should apologize to Nigerian Students for neglect and condole the organization over the accidents and trauma the students went through during the validation exercise . Failure of the government to meet our demands, within the next 7days, will further provoke the students; as such we shall continue to use all avenues available to us to ensure the interest of our students is full protected. Finally, we affirm our support and commitment beyond the ordinary to ensure promote and protect the unity, progress and growth of kaduna state and our dear nation COMR USMAN BABA coordinator, NANS ZONE A COMRADE.UMAR S.BALARABE NAKATS NATIONAL PRESIDENT
